Josh Luff is studying Bench Joinery at Richmond College and joined the BECK apprentice scheme last September. His position in the workshop is the first job he’s had, and he admits he wasn’t sure what to expect. “I’ve only been here a short time but I’ve definitely done a lot more than I thought I would have done by now. I’ve enjoyed learning about all the processes and the machines we use. Like the Panel Saw, Thicknesser, Overhand Planer and Chop Saw.”
Apprentices are assigned to an experienced bench joiner and Josh works closely with Luigi Giacopazzi who has 50 years joinery experience. Luigi has overseen two months of machinery training with Josh to ensure he will eventually have the confidence to handle a wide variety of machinery by himself. Josh is enjoying working with the master craftsman and is benefiting from his decades of experience. “Luigi is a very good joiner and he can teach me a lot.”
